sing Eden! 2021

Covid Postponement - hope to reschedule in September 2021

Sing Eden!

Composers young and old, professional, amateur and emerging have been invited to write for a major choral festival - Sing Eden! - in September 2020. More than twenty choirs are signed up for the two day event, coming from Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, with a commitment to perform music which celebrates the wonder of our fragile planet.

Cornwall Music Education Hub has supported fifteen schools, including the Bridge Academy, as pupils have engaged with climate science and song writing.  Led by Matt Douglas their songs are poised to be turned into choral arrangements through generous support of Arts Council, Feast and The Eden Project among others.

Established writers such as Russell Pascoe, Becky McGlade and Helen Porter from Cornwall are among fourteen composers from across the country who have been commissioned to compose new works for this project.

The theme of environmental well-being will drive the mission, showing how song can be used to explore deep and nuanced issues and engage a new generation with an understanding of art’s ability to inspire and persuade.

Sing! A song for Bridge! Posted: 27/01/2020

Bridge Schools are currently involved in a year-long collaborative music project led by Nick Hart to co-create choral compositions which will be performed at The Eden Project by some of Cornwall’s finest choirs this September with the theme of environmental well-being the inspiration.

Last term, Bridge Schools children from across the 14 primary academies met Luci Isaacson, leading climatologist, to develop their understanding of the key environmental issues challenging our planet. They then worked with talented musician Matt Douglas from Cornwall Music Education Hub to transform their ideas into songs with the ambition of inspiring change.

One of the teachers commented, ''The event has been a fantastic experience for the children. The lyrics are inspirational and the singing very impressive. Joining together here at St Martin's church has provided the children with the opportunity to meet with others across the Trust as part of this creative journey.''

On 21st January, over 200 pupils from across Bridge Schools Trust performed at St Martin’s Church. It was a magical opportunity for the children to share and celebrate their hard work as well as spread key environmental messages through the medium of song.

“It was really exciting! We felt quite nervous about singing today, but with Matt’s help, we did it! We’ve really enjoyed singing with other Bridge Schools children today,” said a pupil from Polperro Primary.

“The kids were really impressive, very inspirational, and in such a short space of time they worked really hard and should be proud of themselves,” expressed another Teacher.

Chief Executive Adrian Massey commented, “It was lovely to see the children from each of our 14 schools walk forward so confidently to sing their school song to everyone in the church. What an incredible opportunity for them to sing with 200 other Bridge Schools children in such a beautiful setting. We are indebted to Nick Hart for organising the event with Matt Douglas from Cornwall Music Hub.”

Over the coming months, Matt will continue to work to develop the children’s ideas ready for performances by professional choirs at Eden later this year – the perfect setting to disseminate messages from the children about the future of their planet.

Re-ImagineKernow Choral Project at Eden
Supporting each other in finding creative solutions

Re-ImagineKernow is a Cornwall-based voluntary group. It has an explicit aim of supporting individuals and local communities in managing small ecological changes. We believe that small changes added together can make a difference to the health of the planet. A key focus is to encourage the younger generation - those who will inherit the dubious legacy of their forbears - to grapple with the challenges of environmental well-being. Our methodology is to be educational, creative and constructive - and to give young people a voice.

In this project the power of collective singing is to be used to explore deep, nuanced issues and engage a new generation with an understanding of art’s ability to inspire and persuade.
We are commissioning songs to be performed by a range of Cornwall’s finest choirs at The Eden Project in September 2020. There is a particular focus on encouraging young composers.  We are also commissioning some professional and established composers to write themselves, and to act both as mentors for budding composers, and to assist in arranging music for wider forces.

Compositions for Choirs
The Arts for the Environment Festival at Eden in September 2020 is featuring a range of choirs all with a commitment to convey their strong passion for a bright, optimistic and hopeful vision for our environmental future.

We have received funding from Eden, Feast Cornwall, Cornwall Education Music Hub and The Arts Council to support choral composition for this major festival.  There are four ways in which you can write for this project:

Category 1 Young People
As a young person of school age (aged 5 - 16 on August 31st 2020)
Category 2 Emerging Composers
As someone who can or wants to write for choirs but who would need support in turning their ideas into choral works
Category 3 Amateur Choral Composers
As someone who has written or arranged for choirs and would feel confident to write in their own right
Category 4 Professional or Experienced Choral Composers
As someone with a proven track record who could take on a paid commission.  This is likely to be by invitation, but anyone should feel free to apply for this, showing some evidence of previous work

Types of choir include:

Mixed Choir (SATB, can be divisi)
Youth Choir (SATB)
Girls Choir (SSAA)
Boys Choir (SAC)
Male Voice Choir (TTBB)
Community Choir (SABar)
